Magnifying glass as cheap macro lens

I've seen someone use a cheap magnifying glass as a macro lens...his results are quite ok... can get quite sharp closeups of pygmy seahorses! Anyone else tried this?

I've tried it once but I think you should just use a proper macro lens... it's much better! Wink [;)]

Using a magnifying glass works but its not as powerful underwater as on the surface.  Its to do with the refreactive index of air, water and the glass.  See this link which give some good detail about it:

I had DIYed a adapter for close up lens for my Canon A70. and have close up lens +10, +4, +2 , +1. they are for sale. anyone interested can let me know.
