I took my open water and advanced in Aust and ever since then, i've started diving around Perth. Rockingham, Busselton Jetty, Dunsborough Swan wreck (really huge and nice!!), cottesloe (nothing much). waters are cold @ times, which i can't stand but hav to get used to it and dying to go back to singapore and dive in warm waters!!! :P newae, anyone out there who has dived in Aust recommend any gd diving sites? besides the great barrier reef.. or has anyone dived in Perth before? oh yea, i do want to dive ningaloo reef in WA. do plan to go on a diving holiday after exams.... :)    Report

However, I have done few dives when I was doing a road trip from Melbourne ending in Cairns.   In Melbourne, there's Port Sea, Sorrento, Port Phillips Bay - seahorses and seadragons are common. Wilson Prom - dive with seals! (Nice trekking place if not diving) Going north, I dove in Eden (NSW) - Wrecks, seals and many sharks like port jackson, wobbiegong etc Further up, I did not dive in sydney but went to Townsville (Queensland). Yongala Wreck is a must! Rich marine life and alot of big stuffs. WhitSunday... diving is ok but scenery...woo.... GBR - Superb live on board facilities and good food at a very reasonable price. You guys must heard enough about GBR so I shall skip that.   Enjoy        Report

Perth, Rockingham, Busselton Jetty, Dunborough, cottesloe, all bring back fond memories. Have you been to the Royal Perth Show? I've made a total of 20 trips back to Perth since graduation and still loving it! Maybe I should work for WA tourism ; ) Busselton Jetty was closed 2 years ago when I was there due to poor viz at the time (It was winter). I will try again soon! It seems you can dive with dolphins in Bunbury (I think Rockingham too). Neptune Island is good for great white diving, but you'll have to do it in a cage of course ; ) Good luck with your course and may you graduate with flying colours!      Report

Sharon,   Before you go all the way to Singapore for warm water, consider travelling north in Australia.  There is excellent diving around Darwin which can be combined with a trip to Kakadu or perhaps head to the area around Broome.  On the east coast, try the areas around Port Douglas or Cairns.  My wifre and I have visited Australia several times and have dived in these areas.  We too are not cold water fans but will make it to south Australia some day to see the sea dragons and dive some of the jetties known for their critters.  Good luck!    Report

Though it'll be expensive to travel to the eastern states, but i'll make sure i'll explore around townsville/whitsundays. Are u studying in Melbourne? Or did you and ur friends decided to jus go on a road trip from Melbourne upwards? :) Sounds FUN!! haven't had a road trip for ages. furthest i've been to was Margaret River! :P haha. newae, do plan to come to WA. Prob best would be to dive at ningaloo reef, cos that's the ultimate dive area in WA. i'm not sure whether u have heard of ningaloo though. apparently the Hilton hotel chain is planning to build a resort there and there are a few protestors.... oh yes, have u done a live-aboard in Cairns?? I'm trying to find a cheap  $$ for it. if u know any cheap live-aboards (prob below $1000) , do let me know! thanks loads :) :) To Editor: WOW!! i didn't know you were a murdoch student, cos I AM too! yay! :) what did you study in Murdoch though? i'm guessing it's journalism. hey! do come to perth again, then me and my other dive buds can take you around good diving spots.... but it's not as spectacular as the ones you see in Asia or any tropical country.. :) be prepared for a bit of cold water. yes, i did go to the perth royal show twice! it's good fun! i missed this yr's one, cos was busy with other work. pity. busselton jetty is a quiet area, but also nice. I dived there and well, honestly you don't get to see fantastic sights, but there are schools of small fish+ snappers around. other than that, nothing much. i did a day AND night dive, but i'm not a fan of night dives. bunbury... i'm not sure abt swimming with the dolphins. i think that was monkey mia. btw, lately there have been two shark sightings at cottesloe beach within 24hrs a few days ago!! yea! one was a 4m great white and the other was a bronzed whaler (sth like that). scary huh? think it's the whale season now. have a good time diving around Asia! To Rhinopias: Thanks for your recommendations. Darwin is famous for its SUPER HOT weather, so diving there shouldn't be a problem, with the warm waters (?) there. Where is Kakadu by the way? haven't heard of that area before, but sounds good. have you done a live-aboard in Cairns? Was it cheap? I'm thinking of doing a live-aboard in Cairns, but hopefully below $1000 a room or something for 5 days. Wow! that's great to hear! going to South Australia! will you and ur wife do any cage-diving as well??? :) hehe. that will be such a dream to encounter a great white, but no cage diving for me though. i'm scared. haha. :) well, have a good time in south australia then!! do tell me your accounts after your trip!! :) thanks lots    Report

I graduated (Communication Studies and English and Comparative Literature) in 1993. I bet you're in commerce. There are definitely dolphins in Monkey Mia - I fed one of them on a guided tour of course - but there are also dolphins nearer to you in Bunbury, I'll check it out and revert soon. So i did a 2months backpack/roadtrip with another friend.   I did my GBR 3days/2night liveaboard with Pro Dive and it cost less than $450 after discount (Can't remember exact cos is few years back). Is a new vessel then and was twin sharing. If you decide to book anything there, be it skydive, bungy jump, dive etc.... just go to any backpackers hostel and they will arrange for you. Remember to bargain a little! Yes you can do that but of cos be merciful...scenerio is not like thailand or china.   You can save alot by staying in backpackers, that is if u dun mind. I stayed in a quad share air con room before and pay only AU$12 a day inclusive of 1 decent meal! And the hostel is at Esplanade (Cairn's main area). I stayed in another one which offers free transport to/fro beautiful trekking area.   Never been to WA, travelled furthest west was Adelaide. Heard abt Nigaloo reef...there will be one day!   By the way Townsville is a small and quiet place... but is one of the most accessible place to dive Yongala   Have fun!    Report

Hey there, Ningaloo in the northwestern part of Australia is supposed to superb and the waters aren't that cold, relatively speaking. It's pretty easy to get there from Perth, just fly up to Exmouth. The Ningaloo Reef is supposed to be beautiful and it's even possible to do some diving with humpback whales.
